Get Outside BC

Vancouver Community Project (Pilot)

CPAWS-BC believes that in order to ensure conservation is a long-term priority, we need to equip the next generation of youth to feel safe exploring nature; to defend socially, culturally and biologically important spaces; and to lead their peers along a similar journey.

Throughout 2017, our team will be working with the Vancouver Foundation and social service organizations to develop a new branch of Get Outside BC for youth age 14-24 in and from the childcare system.

Get Outside BC - Vancouver Community Project (Pilot)

Who: Youth with experience in the childcare system, aged 14-24, from the Vancouver area

When: July & August 2017

Where: Phase 1 will be in Say Nuth Khaw Yum Provincial Park (a.k.a. Indian Arm). Phase 2-3 will be community-based.

What: The three phases of the Get Outside BC Vancouver project are briefly as follows:

Phase I – Youth Outdoor Leadership Camp - August 9th – 11th 2017

For 3 days/ 2 nights, 10 youth will come together for an awesome canoe trip down Indian Arm Park. You will get to participate in leadership and outdoor skill building workshops, try new outdoor activities and learn how to plan outdoor adventures from when they return home. All expenses of this project are paid for, and all the gear will be provided. Outward Bound forms need to be completed by August 1 for meal and gear prep.

*Prior to the camp, participants are expected to complete an Outward Bound information package.

Phase II – Youth-led Outdoor Initiatives and Outdoor Adventures / July - August 2017

Youth will attend bi-weekly group gatherings to continue building leadership skills and to continue getting outside. Within each month you will attend a group meeting focused on skill building and a separate gathering to do an outdoor activity together (i.e. paddle, hike, biking, shelter building, etc.).

Phase III - Celebration / End of August 2017

Youth participants, mentors, and Get Outside BC staff will gather to celebrate the achievements, offer feedback on each other’s development, and go for a final outdoor adventure together. This will be done at the end of the summer with partner organizations.
