The South Kootenay Mountain Caribou herds have been identified in the BC recovery strategy as requiring the most aggressive actions, with the goal to increase subpopulation size (from 20 and 37, resp.) to a minimum of 75-100 animals in each of the SW and SE recovery planning units. This project endeavors to implement specific action items (identified by the local Recovery Action Group) that address threats to individual animals, habitat degradation, and disturbance of herds. Anticipated benefits include reduced caribou mortality, increased protection of core / connectivity habitat, identification and description of calving habitat, reduced disturbance from backcountry skiing, and increased public awareness.
