CPAWS director Wayne Sawchuk receives prestigious Canadian Environment Award silver medal
Conservationist, photographer and CPAWS-BC director Wayne Sawchuk is a 2006 recipient of the Canadian Environment Awards. The awards ceremony is a major event every year during Canadian Environment Week and it celebrates the commitment of Canadians who are helping to protect, preserve and restore our country's environment.
Wayne received his conservation award for 14 years of working to save the largest continuous tract of pristine wilderness in northern British Columbia - the Muskwa Kechika Management Area.
Dubbed the "Serengeti of the North," the Muskwa-Kechika region occupies 6.4 million hectares, where the boreal plains and muskeg meet the mountains. It is home to North America's greatest diversity of large mammals, including moose, grizzlies, wolves, Stone sheep, elk, bison, caribou and mountain goats. "You can go for six weeks and never see a soul," says Sawchuk.
You can learn more about the Muskwa-Kechika at the 2006 CPAWS-BC annual general meeting on June 23. Wayne will be presenting his slide show "Power of Place". This is his story of northern BC from his youth through his awakening as a conservationist, illustrated with his stunning photographs. The stories and photographs are taken from Wayne's large-format book, Muskwa-Kechika, the Wild Heart of Canada's Northern Rockies and his DVD featuring outstanding images of the M-K gathered over 20 years of work and travel in the wilderness and set to an original soundtrack including songs and sounds of wildlife and wilderness.
Wayne's fresh view of northern wildlife and wildlife interactions with their environment make for a richly rewarding, informative and moving presentation.
