Journey to the Deep Sea: A special Ship2Shore public presentation

Join us on World Ocean Day, June 8, at 7 PM (PDT) at SFU Harbour Center Campus for a live-streamed presentation from Fisheries and Oceans scientists exploring seamounts, hydrothermal vents, and cold seeps of the deep sea off the British Columbia coast.

The deep sea is the world’s least explored ecosystem, with strange and wonderful marine life found nowhere else on Earth. Canada’s newest proposed marine protected area, Tang.ɢwan – ḥačxwiqak – Tsig̱is, will protect these habitats from bottom trawling, deep sea mining, oil and gas activities and ocean dumping.

Watch the expedition’s findings on a big screen at an SFU theatre, chat with scientists over the video feed, and enter to win door prizes.

This event will take place on the lands and waters of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) Nations. Our special guests are joining from the sea within Haida, Quatsino, Pacheedaht, and Nuu-chah-nulth waters.

Finding balance on the coast: Healthy ocean through Marine Spatial Planning

The BC coast is a busy seaway, fishing ground, and ecological treasure. How do marine planners account for overlapping user demands and conflicting activities on the coast? Marine spatial planning (MSP) is a collaborative process used for ocean protection. MSP helps inform holistic plans for the coast that balance environmental, economic, social and cultural values.

This Ocean Week 2023, learn about how marine spatial planning is helping protect the coast in Canada. Join us on Monday June 5 at 12PM (PDT) for a webinar all about MSP and how this can advance marine conservation in BC!

Hear from Marine Use Planner, Shauna Johnson (W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council) about their work exploring the ways MSP supports community stewardship on the South Coast of BC.

SPEAKERS

Shauna Johnson (she/her) is a Marine Use Planner with W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council. She is Coast Salish from the Tsawout First Nation on her mother’s side and Tsimshian from Laxkwala’ams on her father’s side. Shauna holds a Master of Science degree in Indigenous Community Planning (ICP) and has specialized expertise in providing planning support for Indigenous communities to revitalize and promote Indigenous community planning research, methods and practices grounded firmly within Indigenous Laws, legal traditions and ways of Knowing and being.

W̱SÁNEĆ Leadership Council’s mandate is to promote respect for W̱SÁNEĆ culture, traditional practices, language, and the interests of the W̱SÁNEĆ First Nations. They are working to establish a community-based Marine and Land Use Plan for the W̱SÁNEC territory, which will help guide future decision-making for the marine environment and the W̱SÁNEĆ way of life.

Join us for a global celebration of Ocean Week June 6-10 2022!

You’re invited to join CPAWS-BC’s Ocean Conservation Campaign experts for a special launch for our new Great Bear Sea campaign.

The Great Bear Sea, also referred to as the Northern Shelf Bioregion, is found off the north and central coasts of BC next to the famous Great Bear Rainforest.

Join us on Zoom on June 9 to learn about the incredible and unique marine life that lives here. Hear about how coastal First Nations are leading the process with the Canadian and BC governments to create a marine protected area (MPAs) network for the region. Thanks to people like you advocating for strong ocean protection, we have a plan to build on the existing three MPAs here to create a whole network of protected areas to further support important habitats. These connected MPAs increase the resilience to impacts and protect the health of the Great Bear Sea for present and future generations.
